”Who
except God can give you peace? Has the world ever been able to satisfy the
heart?” – St. Gerard Majella: (was an Italian lay brother of the Congregation
of the Redeemer, better known as the Redemptorists )
Gospel
Text: (JN 14:1-6)
Jesus said to his disciples:
"Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You have faith in God; have faith also
in me.
In my Father's house there are many
dwelling places.
If there were not,
would I have told you that I am going
to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for
you,
I will come back again and take you to
myself,
so that where I am you also may be.
Where I am going you know the
way."
Thomas said to him,
"Master, we do not know where you
are going;
how can we know the way?"
Jesus said to him, "I am the way
and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except
through me."
In the Gospel reading, part of Jesus'
parting discourse after the Last Supper, Jesus assures his disciples and us
that there are many places reserved for us in his Father's house. Always ready
to question, Thomas asks, "Lord, we don't know where you are going; how
can we know the way?"
Jesus
replies, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father
but through me." The Son of God became man precisely to reconcile
humankind with God, to re-connect humankind with God because the connection had
been ruptured by the sin of our first parents.
Speaking in common computer
language, Jesus is the GPS map to show us the way to the Father; his life and
his teachings give us the truth about the Triune God; through the Holy Spirit
and the Church he allows us to share in God's life in preparation for eternal
life and happiness with God.
Jesus also assures us, "Do not be
troubled! Trust in God and trust in me." Despite many obstacles, despite
many trials and difficulties, we have him at our side. Have trust in him. Have trust
in his teaching and love.
